Quiz number 1 ..

Today was the quiz, it wasn't that tough but some were tricky enough. I got 13 out of 20 . Haha... Actually i was quite excited about the quiz because i had not have any tests since my 0 lvls (design school whatttt)...

alright. next was website evaluation done in class. We went through www.talkingcock.com and did roleplay on 3 different people. the prime minister, Singaporean and foreigner. In our roles, we had to discuss about the website from their perspectives. Yea... we had a bit of fun browsing through some of their works and i have to say that talkingcock.com, even though the name is cock, it gives singaporeans a chance to share their thoughts on the "gar ment". Should the "gar ment" ban it? I don't think so... We are living in this tiny island with so much restrictions, if we can't even express our feelings infront of the little box, i bet many of us would love to swim to Msia. yeaaaaaa, they got good food, cheap goods and no ERPs.

We touched on this cool thing called invisible web. It is a collection of information stored in the form of data. Some of these invisible web are free but some are for commercial purpose, available only if your organization has purchased access to them. Why did i call it cool? Because we cannot accessed the data in invisible web via a general-purpose search engine(sounds so top secret).

I just found out that TP has bought an invisible web for staff and student(http://spark.tp.edu.sg/) and we can access it through password.

Deepavali

We had e-learning on a public holiday. Woke up early to start discussing about our learning progress. It was pretty fun because everyone of us has different preferences and thinking. A very good way to learn from each other. However, people who are not "open" in their thinking may end up quarreling in the discussion forum.

Oh ya talking about discussion forum. Someone did replied my post...

I was quite excited about it when people really reply to my question (even though it doesn't help much). This is the first time i asked a question in a discussion forum and i really didn't expect to have any replies. It is a very good way to learn but, sometimes, you have to wait for quite a while to have your answers to your question. I guess i was lucky because it didn't take quite long for me to get the "answers" (i used " " because the replies i got are quite useless, no offense).

BYE!

Deepavali ...

We had an online discussion on a public holiday. I prefer this form of learning because "answers" comes from different people from different perspective. Also, it is another form of socialising with people from the other side of the world. Not very productive today..

DAY 4 of EIR

I learn something very interesting today. It is call the boolean operator. It may seem very simple, but it is effective for research purposes. Many a times, when we are doing research, we do not know what word to put into the search engine (super singlish, but this isn't important). And these could cause many irrelevant search results which we do not want. But by using boolean operator, we can place the correct keywords to get a more relevant search result.

So... what is boolean operator?

Basically
Boolean searches allow you to combine words and phrases using the words AND, OR, NOT and NEAR (otherwise known as Boolean operators) to limit, widen, or define your search. Most Internet search engines and Web directories default to these Boolean search parameters anyway, but a good Web searcher should know how to use basic Boolean operators.

(Extracted from http://websearch.about.com/od/2/g/boolean.htm)

For example, My topic is ""Discuss the role of the architectural industry in the global go-green movement".
From there, i extracted out the keywords, "Role, architecture, design, global and green movement". I came out with a table like this(below)

From this table, i came out with the sentence, "(Role*) AND (Architecture*) AND (Design* OR Create*) AND (Global*) AND (Green movement OR Sustain*).

And the sentence is used in the search engine. Try it, it is easy to do and very effective.

One new search tool that i have learnt which i find it very useful is Metacrawler. It looks like a normal engine but the results are really incredible. These crawlers searches result from many different search engines like yahoo and google, and compiled it in pages . It is definitely a very effective research tool. You may want to try using it. Visit http://www.metacrawler.com/ .

( hope you guys learn something)
